Chairman of the parliamentary committee on ways and means Patali Champika Ranawaka visited the wholesale market in Colombo Pettah yesterday (05).
The purpose of his visit was to raise awareness on consumers and to inquire into market conditions.
On the occasion, he called for the intervention by the Consumer Affairs Authority to prevent the exploitation of consumers by the traders.
He also discussed how to reduce the prices of essential commodities during the festive seasons.
A report by the committee has revealed how traders had earned undue profits from imported big onions, potatoes etc.
