Fisheries minister Douglas Devananda faced a public protest at Ponnaveli in Kilinochchi on 05 April against his attempt to handover land for limestone mining.

He was accused of trying to transfer the land to Tokyo Cement, against which the villagers have been protesting for 270 days.

Protestors noted that it would aggravate the drinking water shortage they now face and also lose them agricultural and pasture land.

Devananda allegedly bypassed the protestors and tried to get the Survey Department to demarcate the land for handover.

However, he was foiled and turned back by the protestors.
