The SLPP has taken a decision with regard to the presidential election in order to prevent a further division in the party.
It will not field a candidate of its own and will support incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe at unofficial level.
National organizer Basil Rajapaksa met party MPs at the Nelum Mawatha office on 20 March and elaborated on the matter.
He stressed to them that they should not forget Wickremesinghe for having protected them during difficult times.
It was said at the meeting that cabinet and state ministers from the SLPP, led by Prasanna Ranatunga, will break away from the party and support Wickremesinghe if the party fields a candidate or decides against supporting him.
