Stressing that the presidential polls should take place this year, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has vowed to prevent plans by the president to postpone it.

Premadasa said he would not tolerate the president’s attempts to deny the people their voting rights in the guise of abolishing the executive presidency.

He was speaking after donating smart classroom equipment to St. Anne’s College in Colombo yesterday (09).

However, he maintained that it was the SJB’s policy that amendments were needed to the executive presidency.

The position is now being used as a repressive tool against citizens’ democratic rights, freedom and the right to engage in politics, he added.
