The SJB and the SLC have both decided to boycott the ceremonial opening of the fifth session of the ninth parliament today (07).

MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera said the FPC parliamentary group decided not to attend the opening.

In the meantime, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa was due to meet leaders of SJB affiliates at 9.45 am.

There, a decision was to be taken for a walkout from the chamber when the president arrives for the opening, although the other parties are not much in agreement for such a move.

When the new session opens at 10.30 am, president Ranil Wickremesinghe will present the government’s policy statement.

An adjournment debate on his speech will take place in the next two days.

Chief government whip Prasanna Ranatunga said the opening will be devoid of parades, gun salutes etc.
