New leader of ITAK Sivagnanam Sritharan has vowed to fulfil his obligation and responsibility to win the fundamental rights for the Tamil people.

Speaking to the media in Trincomalee on 21 January, he said his role would be based on Tamil nationalism and that all like-minded persons would be brought together for a new tradition of liberation.

Sritharan was elected ITAK leader following a secret ballot, a first in the party’s 74-year history.

M.A. Sumanthiran also contested, while S. Yogeswaran withdrew in support of Sritharan.

Sritharan won 184-137.

Congratulating the new leader, MP Sumanthiran said they would go in the journey together.
