The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday (16) ordered the prison authorities that self-proclaimed Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva,

Mahinda Kodithuwakku be referred to a psychiatrist for a report.  

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage made this order, taking into consideration the suspect’s behaviour while standing in the dock and a request from the prosecution.  

Meanwhile, the Magistrate further ordered the suspect to be kept under remand custody until January 24.  

The suspect Mahinda Kodithuwakku was arrested by CID for allegedly insulting Buddhism and insulting religious feelings.  

Senior Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Pieris appearing for the CID objected to granting of bail for the suspect on the basis of a possibility of arising public disquiet if he was granted bail.

He submitted to the court that the investigations are being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and Penal Code for uttering words with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings. 

President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa appearing for the suspect moved court to release his client on bail on whatever bail condition the court may deem fit.  

Taking into account the facts presented by both parties, the magistrate ordered to remand the suspect until January 24.  

The prosecution alleged that the suspect misused religious teachings for personal financial gains.
