Revenue of the state can be raised by 50 per cent without increasing burdensome taxes on the people, said MP Patali Champika Ranawaka.
The United Republic Party leader said so during a party event in Kamburupitiya yesterday (17).
According to Ranawaka, the government is afraid of the tax defaulting wealthy class that lead a luxurious life.
If their wealth is recorded correctly and made to pay their taxes, the country does not need any new taxes, he said.
Ranawaka said actual incomes of persons who pay more than Rs. 50 million could be determined within one month period.
Only 2,500 of them pay taxes, while another 2,500 do not, he said.
