Many well-known lawyers who oppose the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the acting IGP are found to appear for drug racketeers and earn millions, charged public security minister Tiran Alles.

Alles stressed that operations to curb the underworld and drugs would continue unabated despite pressure of any form.
Noting that he trusted the acting IGP’s ability to resolve the country’s policing issues, he added that he had no personal intentions other than fulfilling the country’s needs.
Lawyers question Deshabandu’s appointment
Meanwhile, the Lawyers Collective has questioned Tennakoon’s appointment despite several court cases pending against him.
ts member Upul Jayasuriya, speaking to the media on 16 December, questioned as to how the Constitutional Council approved him for the position.
Pointing to the supreme court ruling against Tennakoon in a case over the arrest and torture of a former soldier, Jayasuriya said he no longer commands public trust.
