President Ranil Wickremesinghe could face impeachment over his arbitrary interference in affairs of the Constitutional Council (CC), which is the backbone of democratic institutions, and for violating the constitution, said MP Prof. G.L. Peiris.

The executive committee member of the FPC told the media at Nawala today (11) that the opposition would rally alike against Wickremesinghe's authoritarian rule.

He said that with 2024 being a year of elections, the CC needs to act all the more independently.

He went onto charge that some membership positions of the Election Commission are kept vacant in an attempt to postpone elections.

With a warning by the international community over election postponements and the PTA, Sri Lanka stands to lose the GSP+ export concession, Prof. Peiris added.
