A new police chief is expected to be finalized at a meeting today (27) chaired by the president and the public security minister.

The position of IGP remains vacant following the retirement of C.D. Wickramaratne on 24 November after having received three service extensions.

The Constitutional Council has refused to grant him another extension and is yet to receive a list of nominees either.

Police sources said an acting IGP will be chosen from among senior DIGs Lalith Pathinayake, Deshabandu Tennakoon and Priyantha Weerasuriya.

A senior official at the Presidential Secretariat said Tennakoon’s name is likely to be sent today to the CC for approval.
