The chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) Prof. Ranjith Bandara has been removed from the committee’s investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption at Sri Lanka Cricket, according to a decision by leaders of all parties.
Another member of the committee will chair the deliberations, with the speaker stressing that that should be done in consultation with Bandara and other members.
The opposition has been asking for the removal of Bandara from the investigations owing to a conflict of interests.
No-faith motion to be abandoned?
Meanwhile, a no-confidence motion to be moved by the SJB against the COPE chairman is likely to get abandoned, said parliament sources.
That is because Standing Orders stipulate the signatures of two ruling MPs for such a motion.
Even then, it takes a year to remove the COPE chair after the adoption of a no-faith motion against him, said a parliament official.
As such, legal experts have advised the SJB against going ahead with their move.
