Protests have taken place to demand justice for a Tamil youth who died in police custody, as relatives and friends gathered for his funeral at Vadukkodai.

Taking the body of Nagarasa Alex (26) for burial at Vellaveli cemetery, they demanded immediate action against the police officers responsible.

Arrested on 08 November for an inquiry on a theft, he had been produced before courts after parents lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on 10 November.

Once remanded at Jaffna Prison, his condition worsened and was admitted to hospital.

A relative videoed Alex’s recount of being tortured by the police.

An inquest found he was already dead when he was admitted to Jaffna Teaching Hospital on 19 November and a report mentioned wounds on his back and limbs.

Jaffna’s DIG Manjula Senarath told the media that four officers of Vadukkodai police have been identified over the youth’s death.
