Mahinda Rajapaksa has blamed partners to the good governance regime now in the SJB of having made the country bankrupt.

The ex-president has told ‘Deshaya’ newspaper that the Rajapaksas were not at fault, as he maintained a seven per cent economic growth until his defeat in 2015.

When the good governance regime ended in 2020, economic growth had dropped to two pc, he claimed.

While saying that he respected the Supreme Court ruling that found the Rajapaksas mismanaged the economic crisis, he questioned the SJB if it was wrong to reduce taxes as per the people’s mandate received by Gotabaya Rajapaksa in 2019.

What Maithri says

Meanwhile, president of the good governance regime Maithripala Sirisena said he thanked and respected the SC for having ruled as to who were responsible for the economic crisis.

He said he strongly opposed an appointment of a select committee in this regard.

PSCs are not wise enough to summon judges and question them over their verdicts, said Sirisena.
