Teacher trade unionist Joseph Stalin has vehemently objected to a Defence Ministry plan to set up social intelligence units to curb narcotic drugs within schools.

What the government should do if it honestly intends to eradicate drugs is to wipe them out from the entire country, said the secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union at a media briefing on 08 November.

He was responding to a statement made a week earlier by defence state minister Pramitha Tennnakoon that social intelligence units would be formed in collaboration with the national intelligence.

The aim is to prevent various misdeeds within the schools system, he told a passing-out ceremony at National Cadets Corps training centre in Rantembe.

Stalin noted that educational authorities were there to take appropriate action within schools, while the law enforcement has its duties elsewhere.

He cast doubts if the government has an ulterior motive in this plan.
