A case filed against an alleged disruption to a Hindu religious activity at Kurunthurmalai archaeological site has been fixed for hearing again on 23 February 2024.

Buddhist monks and the police have been cited as the respondents in the petition filed by four Tamil activists.

Mullaitivu acting magistrate took up the matter for the first time on 19 October.

It relates to the incident on 14 July, when a Pongal offering was taking place at the site claimed by both Buddhists and Hindus.

Monks violently tried to prevent the activity, while the police assaulted and removed several Tamil politicians, activists and journalists covering the incident, according to a complaint lodged with the police.
