Dayasiri Jayasekara has been proposed to be appointed a senior vice president of the SLFP, according to political sources.
The proposal by several party seniors comes weeks after he was removed as general secretary of the party.
SLFP chief Maithripala Sirisena has said that if Jayasekara returns to the party, he would be offered a position other than chairman, general secretary and national organizer.
The party already has six senior vice presidents.
Jayasekara and his family are presently out of the country.
