The UNP should not change any of the party positions, its central committee decided yesterday (12), ‘Lankadeepa’ newspaper reported.

Seniors who spoke at a meeting of the CC noted that their leaders have the strength to continue their efforts towards taking the party forward.

The event was chaired by party chief, president Ranil Wickremesinghe, where a proposal to appoint ex-minister Ravi Karunanayake as deputy leader or general secretary was discussed.

The CC also decided against a suggestion that had come up previously to abolish all party positions, excepting leader, general secretary and chairman.

Incumbent chairman Wajira Abeywardena said the party should go forward as one.

Also airing views were deputy leader Ruwan Wijayawardena and assistant leader Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who said the office-bearers were touring the country and working to build the party at the grassroots level.
