A remembrance event took place at Kokuvil in Jaffna yesterday (12) for 55 Tamil civilians murdered by Indian peacekeepers 36 years ago.

The TNA and the TNPF parties organized the function at a memorial erected at Pirampadi, attended by victims’ relatives, who paid floral and other tributes.

The murders from 13 October 1987 came after the killing of 29 IPKF men by the LTTE during a raid following information that Velupillai Prabhakaran was in hiding at Jaffna University.

Indian soldiers armed with machineguns and assisted by tanks targeted civilians in a series of attacks.

Small children, four university students, elderly men and women were among the dead.

Indian soldiers also bombed the university’s library and nearby buildings, said survivors.
