The Teaching Hospital in Jaffna has banned the use of mobile phones during duty hours by nurses and other staff.

The ban ordered by the northern province director of health services comes after allegations of medical negligence over the amputation of a hand of a girl who had been admitted to receive treatment for fever.

Testifying at an inquiry, most patients have complained that nurses spend most of the time on their mobile phones and ignore the patients.

The ban is expected to become effective at other hospitals in the province shortly.
