A container truck collided with a Colombo-bound office train from Polgahawela at Wilwatte level crossing in Mirigama this morning (09).
The accident caused extensive damage to the railway signals system, electricity cables and to the train engine.
No injuries have been reported, said the police.
As a result of the incident, several trains on the line will be delayed, said the Railway Department.
Following the accident, vehicular traffic on Giriulla-Mirigama road has come to a standstill.
Police advise motorists to use alternative routes – for those proceeding to the expressway at Mirigama to use Colombo-Kandy road and those from Divulapitiya to turn left from Mirigama town and enter Danowita and Warakapola roads to gain access to Colombo-Kandy road.
Vehicles leaving the expressway at Mirigama for Colombo and Divulapitiya should turn left at Haddamulla junction and enter Colombo-Kurunegala road.
