Special security has been provided to the home of power and energy minister Kanchana Wijesekara in Matara, reports said.

Since the morning of 05 August, police teams are deployed there following an intelligence warning that farmers demanding water for their crops are likely to surround the minister’s house.

All access roads to the Wijesekara’s home have been barricaded and all road users being searched, causing severe inconvenience to area residents.

The Army too, is in readiness to answer any contingency.

Farmers are against Wijesekara for having opposed a proposal by the agriculture minister to the cabinet to release waters of Samanala Wewa reservoir for agricultural purposes.

The power minister objected, saying that if that was done, there will have to be power-cuts of several hours affecting the entire country, sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe told the media.
