Passage of the anti-corruption act is a must, said president of the National Movement for Social Justice, Karu Jayasuriya.
In a statement, he said it was no secret that corruption at various levels impacts on the country’s economic bankruptcy and social injustice.
There is a strong call from the public to curb corruption, with politicians in power and state officials accused of committing various corrupt acts.
Therefore, it is crucial that parliament adopts laws against corruption, Jayasuriya stressed.
Until such time its shortcomings are addressed in due course, the act in its present form needs to be adopted, he said, adding that every MP has an unavoidable national responsibility to support it.
Committee stage debate today
The committee state debate on the anti-corruption draft takes place in parliament today (19).
Meanwhile, the SJB said its support for the bill depends on the government response to the amendments it has proposed.
Meeting Tamil MPs yesterday, president Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized the anti-corruption law would undergo amendments by the parliamentary committee, taking into consideration the proposed amendments by the Supreme Court.
