An extremist political party is using the issue of religious places in the north to “do things that should not happen in a country”, said state defence minister Pramitha Bandara Tennakoon.

He was speaking to the media on July 06, just days after Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) leader Udaya Gammanpila visited the controversial Kurundi Vihara in Mullaitivu.

Tennakoon also said the return of land in the north and the east was taking place properly to ensure the real owners were getting the land back.

With a committee appointed to carry out the task with transparency, 80 percent of northern land has been returned to the people, he said.

He stressed that no military camp would be removed to satisfy anyone, and that a complete review would be undertaken if it is done at all.

The state minister also announced plans to recruit 20 pc of personnel for the National Cadets Corp from the north and the east.

They will serve as social intelligence units in their respective areas to ensure society’s security, he added.
