Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa says he does not want to take the people to the streets.

It was a decision taken by the people themselves to throw out the president they elected with 6.9 million votes, he said during the House debate yesterday (01) on domestic debt restructuring.

He answered government allegations that the opposition wanted to take the people to the streets, see the downfall of the banking system and ruin bank accounts.

Parliament has to debate a debt restructuring because the SLPP government and its president ruined the country’s economy, he stressed.

Arguing against the DDR, he said the opposition agreed with the seeking of assistance from the IMF, but that the government’s deal with the global lender was wrong.

Furthermore, the IMF has not asked for a DDR, and it is the government that wants a DDR, Premadasa charged.

There should be equality in any writing off of debt, without favouring the nine per cent of the country’s super rich and laying the entire burden on pension funds, said the opposition leader.

He added that a government by him would get the IMF conditions eased.
