SJB MP Dr. Harsha de Silva says he will be closely monitoring any restructuring of domestic debt, and stresses that there should be no writing-off of the borrowings.

He said in Colombo yesterday (25) that the opposition was against a restructuring of domestic debt.

If unavoidable, that should be done in such a way that brings best relief for the country, de Silva said, adding that extending support in such a situation would not be a problem.

A correct restructuring of domestic debt will bring down the risky interest rates on treasury bills that will help in a reduction of interest rates.

Then, the contracted economy would have space to expand, which is the need of the hour for all citizens, he said.

He hoped the proposal would be submitted to the Committee on Public Finance (CoPF), which he chairs.
