Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) leader Gajendra Kumar Ponnambalam has accused the police of harassing him at the instigation of the public security minister.

MP Ponnambalam charged minister Tiran Alles of leveling one-sided accusations against him even before an investigation report is available.

Alles admitted he was yet to receive the report into the altercation between the Tamil MP and several policemen at Marudankerni in Jaffna on June 02.

Ponnambalam was arrested on June 07 in Colombo and banned from travelling overseas.

He has since been released on bail and the ban lifted.

Speaking in parliament on June 08, Ponnambalam alleged the public security minister did not know the basics of the duties of the police.

Plainclothes police should first produce identification, he noted, adding that they behaved like the thugs of the SLPP.

Disputing the accusations leveled by Alles against him, the TNPF leader said he would wait until video footage of the incident confirms the truth.
