The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) will restrict freedom of expression, said the United Republic Party (URP).

Senior vice president of the URP Shiral Lakthilake told the media yesterday (31) however the ICCPR intended not to imprison people, but to safeguard their civil and political rights.

Sri Lanka should become a signatory to this covenant, he said.

Also speaking here, president of the URP’s politburo Karu Paranawithana said the constitution, while ensuring the right to follow a religion of choice, is restricting that very same right at the same time.

URP national organizer Sumeda Ratnayake alleged a conspiracy by a certain group to destroy religious harmony in the country.
