An attempt by the Army to legally takeover a land in Mullaitivu it already occupies but belongs to the Irrigation Department has come to light, according to area correspondents.

The 25-acre plot at Oddusudan houses its 64 Brigade, and a lieutenant colonel has asked the divisional secretary’s permission to acquire it.

The matter came up at the area development committee meeting on May 03, attended by state minister Cader Mastan and several other MPs and officials.

The Irrigation Department rejected a claim by the Army that it has already given a plot of land in exchange for the one in question.

Its deputy director Sivapadasundaran Vihirdan told the media that the Oddusudan land has been planned to be used as a key irrigation point with research and storage facilities.

State minister Masthan instructed the Army to settle the matter in consultation with the Irrigation Department.
