Both India and the US had wanted Ranil Wickremesinghe removed as prime minister after Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from presidency, claimed NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa.

He made the claim at the launch of his book ‘Navaya, Sengawunu Kathawa’ (Nine, Hidden Story) at Sri Lanka Foundation in Colombo yesterday (25).

Weerawansa said Gamini Senarath drafted two letters and sent both to Gotabaya who was in the Maldives, but he signed his resignation letter only and the letter for Wickremesinghe’s removal was not signed.

Failed attempts were made by the US ambassador in Colombo and a religious leader, together with an opposition MP, to get speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to take over the country, the NFF leader said.

First copies of the book that details the inside story of the Galle Face struggle were handed over to the son of slain MP Amarakeerthi Athukorale and to the widow and daughter of Chaminda Lakshan, who died in a police shooting in Rambukkana.

Several leading opposition politicians and academicians were present.
