Incumbent Ranil Wickremesinghe will be a non-party candidate at the presidential polls due in 2024, with the intention of forming a government of national consensus, said former finance minister Ravi Karunanayake.

Also Colombo district leader of the UNP, Karunanayake was addressing a ceremony at Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya (JSS) at Pitakotte this morning (08).

On the occasion, secretary of the JSS branch of the CEB Ajith Devapriya was felicitated.

Speaking further here, Karunanayake said strengthening the people by building the country is unattainable without discipline and rule of law.

Now is the last opportunity to build the country, he said, and urged the people to act wisely, responsibly and patiently in this moment.

According to him, the opposition and certain trade unions are bent on destroying the country, not on building the country and strengthening the people.

It is globally accepted that political illiteracy is a main cause for the ruination of a country and a society, he pointed out.

Political illiteracy is the biggest crisis faced by the country that has resulted in the failure of the state, he said.

Noting the government led by president Wickremesinghe is working to bring about reforms in every sphere to prevent the country from bankruptcy and failure, Karunanayake called on all to support that task without falling victim to opportunistic and traitorous forces with petty objectives.
