The Constitutional Council has sanctioned a three-month service extension for police chief C.D. Wickramaratne, said speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
After a meeting of the CC chaired by him at his official residence yesterday (02) afternoon, the speaker has told Neth News the relevant document was referred to president Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The CC has discussed in detail the constitutionality of the cabinet’s decision to extend the tenure of IGP Wickramaratne.
At the talks, premier Dinesh Gunawardena has come under intense pressure over the matter, according to reports.
On March 28, the secretary to the president issued a letter extending Wickramaratne’s term after he completed the retirement age of 60 years two days earlier.
