UNP general secretary Palitha Range Bandara is to appoint new local government members of the party in place of the 1,137, who had been expelled for having supported other parties, said Sirikotha sources.

The process is expected to be completed this week after a proposal in this regard was adopted at a meeting of the party’s working committee on February 21.

Interviews are to be expedited to select qualified persons, said the sources.

The term of the LG bodies, extended by one year as per constitutional provisions, ends on March 19.

With their election scheduled for March 09 not taking place, their administration is to be handed over to special commissioners.

The UNP management committee has decided to appoint the new members at least a few days before that handover takes place.

Meanwhile, members of LG bodies elected from the UNP, but are now allied with the SJB, are to seek redress in court against their expulsion.
