Formally announcing that the local government polls will not be held on March 09, the Election Commission said today (24) a fresh date will be announced on March 03.
The decision was taken at a meeting of its chairman Nimal G. Punchihewa and members S.B. Diwaratne, M.M. Mohamed and K.P.P. Pathirana.
They also decided to request the speaker of parliament to intervene in securing the funds required from the Treasury once a fresh date is announced.
The speaker is to be given a report that details the work that has so far been carried out constitutionally by the Election Commission to hold the polls.
