More than 500 medical doctors have left the country in the face of socioeconomic and political instability in Sri Lanka, said Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe.

The specialist doctor, also secretary of the Jathika Jana Balawegaya, is commenting about the income tax that ranges between six per cent and 36 per cent.

Brain drain is the result of the unfair and arbitrary taxes imposed by the government, he said.

Many more doctors are preparing to sit for examinations to qualify for jobs overseas, while health service technical officers too, are planning to leave the country, he said.

Dr. Abeysinghe demanded the government listen to the voice of all professionals and end the unfair taxes.

He also said the medicines needed for the current year are yet to be ordered, while prices have gone up by 300 per cent for some medicines.

A discussion on Carbon TV elaborated on the professionals’ strong objections to the prevailing taxes.
