A poster campaign in the northern and eastern towns urges a boycott of the 75th Independence Day celebrations.

Reportedly pasted by university students of the two provinces, the poster also calls for the raising of black flags on February 04.

Earlier, the TNA said it decided to boycott the celebrations, with its MP M.A. Sumanthiran saying the Tamil people are yet to gain true independence.

Speaking to the media, he said since independence from colonial rule, majoritarianism has become the rule in the guise of democracy, with even the Sinhala Buddhists now feeling they are denied freedom.

A black day will be declared and a campaign launched to gain true independence for the country, he added.

Several southern political groups too, have similarly declared a black day on February 04.
