Elections will be held after dissolving cricket associations that have functioned for 20-odd years continuously, said sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe in parliament yesterday (10).

He said that Sri Lanka Cricket will be representative of one member each from the nine provinces and from players, umpires and coaches.

The minister said he could not comprehend the country’s future if anyone tries to protect corrupt officials of the SLC.

He said he will obtain services of private lawyers in taking action against Sri Lanka Cricket, since he mistrusted the attorney general in the matter.

Sri Lanka Cricket suspended

Last evening, the International Cricket Council Board suspended SLC’s membership of the ICC with immediate effect.

The ICC Board met and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member, in particular, the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously and ensure that there is no government interference in the governance, regulation and/or administration of cricket in Sri Lanka.

The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course.

Sports minister’s special media briefing

Meanwhile, sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe will hold a special media briefing today at 10.00 am.

Ranasinghe said an appeal will be made after the ICC’s announcement of its reasons for the suspension.
