MP Premnath C. Dolawatte has been elected new president of the National Gymnastics Association of Sri Lanka.

At the election of office-bearers held yesterday (01) at the Sports Ministry auditorium, he secured 27 votes as against 22 votes by his challenger Karunadara Perera.

He is the first parliamentarian to head the national gymnastics governing body since Duminda Silva in 2007.

Earlier, Maithripala Sirisena held the position in 2005 and Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra in 1998.

Udara Liyanwala was elected secretary, Akram Puram as deputy secretary, and Kapila Jeewantha and Kokila Nimesh Kaluarachchi as senior vice presidents.

Sellamuttu Illangowan was elected treasurer uncontested, while two nominations for the deputy treasurer were rejected.
