The suspected presence of landmines is preventing Tamils from returning to their land released by the Army at Thelippalai less than two months ago.

Owners have been barred from entering the more than 234 acres due to suspicion that an 55,000 square feet area could still be mined.

The office of the northern province governor issued the prohibition order effective from 30 May.

Access roads to the land were opened by the authorities following a request by provincial governor P.S.M. Charles.

Presently, inspection of the land for landmines is underway.
