The country is in no need of a government that dances to the tune of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.

It is unreasonable to impose a property tax by blaming it on the IMF, he told parliament.

The government is burdening the masses with various taxes instead of correcting its tax administration, preventing tax evasion and digitalizing taxes, Premadasa charged.

While conceding that the country needs the IMF’s assistance to come out of its bankruptcy, he said talks should focus avoiding an adverse impact on the people.

The government writes off the nearly Rs. 800 billion of loans given to the wealthy and cronies, and at the same time imposes a parate law to auction off the properties of the common people, he charged further.
