The foreign affairs ministry seeks cabinet approval to fill half of the currently vacant third secretary positions with children of government politicians, "Aruna" reported.

They are to be recruited without holding any competitive examination or interview even as 117 applicants have scored high marks at an open competitive examination.

These graduates faced a written test conducted by the Examinations Department and an interview called to fill 106 vacancies in class 3 of the foreign service.

The Public Services Commission and the Management Services Department approved recruiting 40 of them, but the foreign ministry selected only 20 at the interview.

Foreign service jobs have good returns, such as high remunerations, accommodation, transport and a diplomatic passport with visa-free travel.

However, past experiences show political appointees engaging in higher studies, private businesses and enjoying themselves, instead of fulfilling their diplomatic responsibilities.
