Auditor general W.P.C. Wickremaratne has faulted state institutions for not taking follow-up action with regard to nearly 100,000 recommendations issued to prevent fraud, corruption and irregularities.

He called for the introduction of new laws to make it mandatory to implement these recommendations issued by his department.

Also, the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) and Committee on Public Finance (COPF) have a responsibility to ensure same, he said.

The state spends hundreds of millions of rupees each year to conduct audit investigations, based on which these recommendations are issued.

Certain heads of institutions reportedly even ridicule those recommendations.
