President Ranil Wickremesinghe has sent a request to the Constitutional Council that the tenure of attorney general Sanjaya Rajaratnam be extended till the end of this year.

Rajaratnam should complete his term on 27 June.

With chief justice Jayantha Jayasuriya due to retire this December, the president plans to appoint Rajaratnam as his successor.

So, he wants the AG’s term extended by six months and then appoint him the CJ.

Rajaratnam is known to be loyal to the Wickremesinghe regime.

The speaker has received the request on his behalf, while the CC’s meeting for June was not scheduled at its last meeting on 23 May.
