The state failed to collect its expected tax revenue target of Rs. 3,104 billion for 2023, said Prof. Wasantha Athukorale of Peradeniya University.
Quoting from the second report by the parliamentary ways and means committee, he said the target fell short of around Rs. 408 billion.
The Inland Revenue Department earned Rs. 1,550 billion, as against a projected Rs. 1,667 billion.
Customs too, managed Rs. 974 billion, although it expected to collect Rs. 1,220 billion.
So did the Excise Department, failing to meet its Rs. 217 billion target by Rs. 46 billion.
Prof. Athukorale said this year, the projected state revenue is Rs. 3,789 billion.
