A young girl from Ratnapura has challenged a social taboo that prevents women from creating Vesak pandals.
Janani Aludeniya, who lives at Arambadeniya village in Godakawela, said she was glad that she was able to erect a pandal this year.
Forty-feet in height and illuminated with 30,000 bulbs, her work depicts ‘Badragada Jathakaya’.
Speaking to BBC Sinhala Service, Janani remarked that women’s contributions to Vesak pandals have been very rare.
She added that she came to know via social media that she was the first woman to create a Vesak pandal.
