The government has repaid foreign debt and interest totalling 1,909.7 million US dollars after president Ranil Wickremesinghe became president,

says presidential director general (community affairs) Rajith Keerthi Tennakoon in a statement.

He says that from 21 July 2022 to February 2024, 1,338.8 million USD of multilateral loans and interest had been paid back.

There are no outstanding instalments or interest due by February 2024.

Also, 571 million USD of bilateral loans and interest had been repaid in the same duration.

The government is in the process of restructuring 4,439.2 million USD of business loans and interest, he adds.
