A date will be announced for a general election after the Sinhala-Tamil New Year, said Rajapaksa family confidante Udayanga Weeratunga.
The ex-ambassador to Russia says SLPP national organizer Basil Rajapaksa declared readiness to dissolve parliament if agreed to by SLPP MPs.
Weeratunga said the SLPP was certain to win a majority of seats.
Grassroots opinion was different to the support extended to president Ranil Wickremesinghe by certain ministers due to the privileges they enjoy, he said.
However, MP Prof. Charitha Herath said the SLPP had ruined its mandate and had no future.
In the meantime, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said all parties would support Wickremesinghe at future elections.
