Deshabandu Tennakoon assumed duties as the new Inspector General of Police this morning (29) at the police headquarters.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed Tennakoon as the 36th Inspector General of Police of Sri Lanka on February 26.

Born in 1971, Tennakoon began his police career in 1998 as an apprentice Assistant Superintendent of Police.

He holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Colombo and a Master's degree from the University of Kelaniya.

Prior to his current role, Tennakoon served as the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) in charge of the Western Province.

Tennakoon's 25-year career in the Sri Lankan Police has seen him serve in various locations across the country.
