The university system is in crisis due to numerous unintelligent decisions, said URF leader Patali Champika Ranawaka.
Referring to the brain drain among university teachers, he said the situation remains unabated.
Universities have a shortfall of around 6,500 teachers with its current academic staff of around 5,500, he noted.
Ranawaka was speaking at a meeting with university teachers, where his programme for the country was presented for their perusal.
President of their association Prof. Barana Jayawarden said their meeting was one step forward in a political dialogue.
