A protest took place yesterday (25) in Negombo to counter a previous agitation against Colombo archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith over the fish market in Pitipana.

People representing four dioceses participated and claimed the cardinal and other clergy had been insulted by fishermen in Pitipana.

Protestors raised black flags and carried placards to condemn the fishermen, and bell in the churches were sounded as a mark of protest.

The matter arises from court action taken by the Archbishop against a few who had control over the fish market known as Lellama.

A group of fishermen staged a demonstration in front of Bishop’s House in Colombo last week.

The court has ordered that a trustee be appointee for the administration and management of the fish market.

The opposing party held a media briefing and explained their side of the story.
